Headtrash by Mary Jane Popp

Do you find yourself pushing hard to succeed, but you just can’t get traction? Why? Could it be you’re working against yourself? I know it sounds strange, but not after I spoke with Tish Squillaro, who co-authored “Headtrash” with Timothy Thomas, on my POPPOFF Radio Show.

They refer to thought patterns and emotional tendencies that hinder our ability to respond to business issues in a productive and professional way. Head trash is the negative voice of your subconscious. With eighteen years of business consulting experience, they have come up with seven traits we need to trash so we can make intelligent, effective decisions in our lives.

They are Fear, Arrogance, Insecurity, Control, Anger, Guilt, and Paranoia. But wait just one minute. How do I talk back to my subconscious? I have trouble enough dealing with my conscious self. I think my paranoia is setting in. They call Tish the CEO Whisperer, so I asked her to whisper in my ear some ways to deal with this head trash and turn it into a positive. Here goes. These are the recommendations for:

1) FEAR: Build up the big decisions—if you have been frozen by fear, your decision making muscles have atrophied. Don’t push too much strain on them all at once. Start by making smaller decisions that are less frightening. Be consistent. That’s the only way real change will take place. Over time you gain confidence you need to make the big decision that probably seemed impossible.

2) ARROGANCE: Cultivate humility—arrogant leaders tend to think of humility as weak. That’s a false perception. Humility means being realistic about yourself, your abilities, your ideas. It means being honest enough to accept your limitations and admit that you are not perfect. You acknowledge that you can, and do make mistakes. Humility is about truth, and if you want to move forward, you need to be firmly rooted in the truth.

3) INSECURITY: Truly embrace compliments and Value your Worth—instead of leaping to devaluate yourself. Grab the opportunity to pat yourself on the back after any success. It may be as simple as allowing yourself to accept a compliment without diminishing the praise. Then fan the spark of positive feedback into a small fire that you learn how to feed. If you can’t do it for yourself, find a career coach or counselor who can help you.

4) CONTROL: Look at yourself—and ask yourself if you truly need to be involved. Does this really require your attention? Before you dive into a new timeline consuming initiative, see if you can delegate instead. And if you are sincere about wanting to change, ask yourself the hardest question…”am I getting in the way?”

5) ANGER: Breathe—when you start to feel yourself boil over, stop, breath, and think before you do or say anything you might regret. Are you so enraged that it might be a good idea to leave the room? Fine! Get up and take yourself out of harm’s way. Better than saying or doing something that leaves an indelible. You can always address the issue later, calmer and having thought it through.

6) GUILT: Move on quickly—lingering guilt is the mind’s way of trying to rewrite history and change the outcome which, of course, is impossible. What is done is done. No matter how many times you think about it, or try to resolve it differently, nothing will change. Instead, drop the baggage, hit the pedal, and move forward.

7) PARANOIA: Write it out before you blurt it out—before you explode over a perceived slight to your status. Go back to yourself and ask, “why am I feeling this way?” It is remarkable how sitting quietly with your thoughts and a blank piece of paper or computer screen helps you sort out your emotions. Away from the event, you may find that you are misreading the situation through your own interpretations of fear and doubt.

There you have it. Several of these recommendations seem like common sense, but we do let our emotions run away with that common sense. Want to find out just how much of that head trash is stored in there?

Check out this website www.headtrash911.com and take the survey. You might really be surprised. The book is called “Headtrash” cleaning out the junk that stands between you and success. Move on! It’s all up to you! Now Go get ‘em!

Well…if that don’t beat all! This week, an interesting piece of news surfaced that should have buddies Dick Morris and Sean Hannity repeating their now-infamous 2009 G20 confession about how right “conspiracy theorists” have been. This time it’s about a whole different topic, and, if Morris and Hannity are truly journalists, they, along with all other mainstream press, need to be extremely vocal about their revelation.

In their 2009 release, Camp FEMA, independent filmmakers William Lewis and Gary Franchi exposed the early FEMA Directives reveal methods our own FBI uses to “combat perceived threats to the existing social and political order” (FEMA Directive 3). Camp FEMA discloses that throughout four different Presidential administrations, FBI Director J Edgar Hoover ordered agents to “expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize” the activities of certain dissident political groups within the U.S. The FBI claimed success in preventing local chapters of some of these “targeted” groups from forming.

That was then, this is now. A May 10, 2013 article on the CNN Political Ticker revealed that the US Internal Revenue Service had been targeting newly forming TEA Party groups by dragging their feet to approve their requests for Tax Exempt Status.

One-fourth of the applications flagged for farther scrutiny were pulled aside because “they had the names ‘tea party’ and ‘patriot,’ “ according to the IRS Director of tax exempt organizations, Lois Lerner. And, by the way, those with concerns about federal taxes were also one of the groups targeted by the infamous February 2009 MIAC Report.

Now might be a good time to discuss something else pointed out in Camp FEMA. Citing Brian Glick’s book War at Home, the film discusses the four main methods used by the FBI when conducting their often-illegal counter-intelligence practices. Harassment though the legal system seems an eerie fit in this particular scenario. One of the tactics used to harass is discriminatorily enforcing tax laws. While technically not “discriminatorily enforcing” any tax law, they are using laws regarding tax exempt status to hold up approval of the groups opposed to the current administration.

Visit the Lewis Website

Lewis has recently called the mainstream media into question in his latest film, Peddling Influence. Regarding that, in another bit of news, concerning a clear conflict of interest, NewsMax revealed that the Presidents of both ABC and CBS have siblings working for the Obama Administration’s National Security Council.

CBS’s David Rhodes’ brother, Ben, happens to be the Deputy Assistant to the President and the Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications. ABC’s Ben Sherwood’s sister, Elizabeth Sherwood Randall, is the Special Assistant to the President and the White House Coordinator for Arms Control and WMD, Proliferation and Terrorism.

One has to wonder if that is why certain topics regarding maybe Benghazi and Fast and Furious get very little coverage in the mainstream. Add to that the information that White House Press Secretary Jay Carney is married to an ABC senior national news correspondent, Claire Shipman, and the mind begins to reel with “conspiracy,” or maybe just good old-fashioned concern!

Wow, is that the voice of our dear President Obama, ringing in my ears, “…you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems…They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.”

Needless to say, Morris, Hannity and scores of others, including the present and past administrations, need to own up to the fact that those they have vilified as “conspiracy theorists” have been getting it right FAR more often than anyone remotely connected to media or government.

It’s time to dump the alphabet news agencies and follow alternative media. While Morris, Hannity and even President Obama may laugh at you, it’s obvious you will be far better informed!

A 5% growth is the answer.

Read the Kudlow Column at NRO

The really good news from April’s employment report is that all the pessimistic, end-of-the-world, spring-swoon forecasters were wrong. It wasn’t a fabulous report. But it handily beat Wall Street expectations. Stock markets soared on the news.

The bad news, however, is that the U.S. continues to fall further behind its own long-term trends for jobs and economic growth. And lately, hours worked — a key labor measure — have begun to fall.

First the good: Nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000 last month, with private payrolls up 176,000. And the prior two months were revised higher by a net 114,000. The unemployment rate fell slightly from 7.6 to 7.5 percent.

And with all the hysteria over the economic evils of the spending-cut sequester, government jobs have fallen only by an average 5,000 over the past three months — dwarfed by private job gains. Keynesians should weep. So might President Obama. The sequester doom and gloom has not come to pass. In fact, 4 percent real growth in the private economy in the first quarter far outstrips the slippage in government spending.

The ten-year, $1 trillion spending cut launched in 2011 and the ten-year, $1 trillion sequester spending cut that began this year are bright spots in economic policy. As a share of GDP, federal spending is now less than 23 percent, down from a peak of 25 percent. That helps take the government’s boot off the neck of the free-enterprise economy. It leaves more resources in the private sector, letting business — the real hero behind the modest growth we have — breathe a little easier.

But as good as it is that more Americans are working, they may be working fewer hours. Not a good trend.

Total private hours worked are declining. They fell 0.4 percent in April, with manufacturing hours dropping 0.2 percent. And aggregate hours worked for all employees fell four-tenths of 1 percent. These are worrisome trends for the future. This may be a harbinger of the ill effects of the job-killing Obamacare program, where rising tax, mandate, and regulatory costs penalize the fiftieth worker hired and the thirtieth hour worked in small business.

Fearing Obamacare, profitable business is reluctant to invest in the kind of capital projects that create jobs. This is one reason job growth is falling short by at least 100,000 per month.

Nonfarm payrolls remain 2.6 million short of the prior peak reached in January 2008. What’s more, roughly 22 million people are effectively unemployed because they’re actually not working, underemployed, or forced to work only part time.

And partly because people are dropping out of the labor force, or collecting government benefits instead of working, the employment-to-population ratio, which peaked at 64.6 percent in April 2000, has dropped to 56.8 percent in the latest month. That translates to a loss of roughly 10 million jobs from the long-term trend line. It’s a huge waste of human capital and talent, as well as economic growth.

What’s more, the anemic 2.1 percent real GDP recovery of the last 15 quarters (compare that with the 4.4 percent post-WWII average) has thus far created an output gap of roughly $3 trillion, according to RDQ economist John Ryding. This country will need to grow at more than 5 percent yearly for more than a decade if that economic gap is to be closed.

Or think of this: From 1950 through 2007, the long-term historical U.S. economic growth rate was 3.25 percent yearly after inflation. Today we are a staggering 20 percent below that trend.

But a 5 percent growth target would at least get us back on the right directional track. Growth solves a lot of problems. Over ten years, 5 percent growth could reduce the tax-hike-threatening budget deficit by over $7 trillion.

Is 5 percent growth possible? It could be, with the right market-oriented incentives for work, investment, innovation, immigration, health, and retirement. Keep the heat on spending restraint. And don’t forget a sound dollar.

In other words, stop our downward economic course. The U.S. needs an ambitious growth agenda. There is no time to waste.

Rockefeller billions vs Canadian energy and sovereignty – and US jobs, security and families

Visit the Ron Arnold Website

Americans concerned about gasoline prices were encouraged by the Pew Research Center’s new poll, whose headline blared, “Keystone XL Pipeline draws broad support.” A score box showed 63% supporting and only 23% opposing the pipeline that would transport oil from Canada’s vast Alberta oil sands deposits through the Plains states to Texas refineries.

“Every one-cent increase at the pump steals about $1 billion from the larger economy that consumers would have otherwise saved or spent on something else,” the Wall Street Journal has pointed out. High gasoline prices thus translate into lost jobs, lost tax revenues and lower living standards. Americans are beginning to understand that, as the Obama “recovery” gives them real-world economic lessons.

Unfortunately, the Pew report quickly deflated optimism over this support, when it tersely identified who the minority is: “liberals” – stanchions of Big Green’s circus tent. We have seen time and again that the liberal 23% can be a “majority” to President Obama, who wields executive orders to bypass the people.

As his administration approaches a decision, lame-duck politics says he could go either way – even with his own State Department’s second favorable environmental impact report on the KXL’s construction permit. Even with Alberta Premier Alison Redford saying that an Obama rejection would damage U.S. – Canada relations.

“Canada relies on the U.S. for 97% of its energy exports,” Redford said, and “sees the new pipeline as critical to its economic well-being.” And even with ten governors and 22 lieutenant governors sending letters to the President, urging pipeline approval.

What is Obama likely to do? Some 82% of Republicans favor the pipeline, so revenge is not an unthinkable motive for a possible rejection. However, 70% of independents and 54% of Democrats also favor the KXL. Fogging the crystal ball is the ideological split among Democrats: 60% of the party’s conservatives and moderates support building the pipeline, compared to just 42% of liberal Democrats. That considerably flattens Obama’s upward slope toward a potential rejection, but doesn’t level it.

Obama’s decision may hinge on pleasing his base of global-warming advocates. This whole Keystone XL controversy was carefully conceived and organized as a “globally significant response” to global warming. Shutting down Alberta’s oil sands – by blocking both the US-bound Keystone XL pipeline and any other Alberta oil conduit, particularly a proposed link to Vancouver, British Columbia harbors and oil tankers bound for Asia – would supposedly reduce global warming. That’s propaganda, not reality.

As Environment Canada has observed, oil sands production contributes a mere 0.14% of global greenhouse gases, notes, and would add an undetectable 0.00001 degrees C per year to global warming, even if carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases really do drive climate change.

The anti-oil sands campaign – activists call them “tar sands” to evoke ugly images – was devised by the New York City-based Rockefeller Brothers Fund, using earmarked grants to recruit “a network of leading US and Canadian NGOs” and establish a “coordinated campaign structure” to act as its public face, according to a leaked PowerPoint presentation.

The first slide says, “The Tar Sands Campaign, Michael Northrop, Program Officer, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, July 2008.” Seven slides drive home the message that Rockefeller wants its paid campaigners to emphasize: Oil sands and Keystone represent “a globally significant threat” – with “Global Warming,” and “Oil Addiction” as the two “thought leader slogans” in the parade of old shibboleths that trigger brain freeze in Big Green followers. The rest was a coldly calculated, very practical plan to destroy Canada’s single most important export, with Rockefeller giving $7 million per year to activist groups to do the job.

Thinking people understand that being “addicted to oil” is like being addicted to breathing, better living standards, improved health and life itself. Just try getting along without it in a world where fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal) contributed 82% of US energy use in 2012. The “green alternative” (wind and solar) provided a mere 3.3% of our overall needs in 2012; the rest was nuclear, hydroelectric and biomass (mostly wood). Relying on the “green alternative” is like trying to inhale only 3.3% as much as you usually do. There’s an energy gap there we need to account for.

Canadian researcher Vivian Krause exposed the Rockefeller funding for campaigns against Canadian energy exports in her October 2010 Financial Post story, “US foundations against the oil sands.” Five US foundations, including the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, funneled vast sums of money through the Tides Foundation’s Canadian organization, Tides Canada. The Tides family of operations is a notorious California-based funder of left-wing activists.

Krause wrote, “A large part of Tides Canada’s funding comes from the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. These are The Big Five. They give away about US$1.2-billion every year.” In a chilling reminder, she concluded, “If these foundations decide to undermine a foreign industry, they probably can.”

Later that fall, Krause testified before a Canadian House of Commons committee, prompting an audit of the Canadian arm of the Tides Foundation by the Canada Revenue Agency (Canada’s equivalent to the IRS). By Krause’s calculations, Tides, a co-funder of the Rockefeller oil sands campaign, has distributed $19 million to anti-Keystone groups since 2008.

Krause explains that the campaign strategy is intended to foster renewable energy by shifting investment capital away from so-called “dirty oil” and toward so-called “clean energy.” To this end, she said, “they ‘educate’ media, consumers and voters. They stigmatize fossil fuels as bad, thereby facilitating the positioning of renewables as good. It’s basic product positioning and ‘depositioning’ the competitor.”

Not surprisingly, the “education” is slanted. “We get only bad news about fossil fuels and good news about solar and wind,” Krause observes. “We don’t get the whole story.” What gets left out are the advantages of fossil fuels – and the limitations and harmful effects of renewables, like the tiny amount of energy they provide, and the terrible impacts they have on birds, bats and wildlife habitats. “Furthermore, some of the information that is perpetuated is out-dated, and some is plainly false.”

I asked Krause why the Rockefeller presence behind the anti-XL propaganda campaign was virtually invisible. She told me that it has been done quietly but not secretly. “The grants have been disclosed in online databases for years,” she said. “But nobody bothered to add them up and connect the dots.” Krause connected the dots to the networks of foundations that work together on targeted projects.

She directed me to a revealing but obscure source, “Design to Win: Philanthropy’s Role in the Fight Against Global Warming,” which was sponsored by six of “the usual suspects” I have learned to expect to find behind any global warming campaign: the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Energy Foundation, Joyce Foundation, Oak Foundation, and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Another source was, “A Strategy Planning Tool for Western Conservation,” prepared for the Hewlett Foundation by the Redstone Strategy Group, a brain pool of Ivy League hotshots not to be trifled with. Their strategy is to create eight massive national parks, each the size of Switzerland, as a way to stop the development of fossil fuels. Just fence industry out with parks – or Antiquities Act designations.

Anyone who thinks their local grassroots green group just pops up spontaneously in occasional protests needs to read either of these documents. They will find that the “roots” under the environmentalist “grass” are fertilized with bales of hundred-dollar bills. Rockefeller’s actions are quite open, if quiet. Krause said, “The strategy is articulated in discussion papers, but who reads them?”

Nobody except Vivian Krause, evidently. Her Twitter account, @FairQuestions, says, “I follow the money & the science behind enviro campaigns.” Her research and writing are impressive. Her blog profile states, “I work from my dining room table, using Google, on my own nickel. Not part of any political party, any industry, or any campaign.” Her work deserves more attention in the United States.

Krause’s discovery and exposé of the Rockefeller millions behind the anti-Keystone XL campaign could become a factor in Obama’s pipeline construction decision. It has already created Canadian suspicion of environmental groups dancing on the strings of US foundation money.

It’s not the money itself Canadians fear. It’s the way bales of US foundation cash can buy pressure by proxy, to impose undue foreign influence over Canada’s national energy policy and sovereignty.

One must hope Mr. Obama does not wish to be suspected of dancing on the same Rockefeller policy puppet strings as the Big Green bigwigs who were recently arrested protesting at his front door.

The 2013 New Year brought another blow to small medical businesses as Health-Reform Taxes kicked in and promised to scare off venture capitalists as the little guy suffers.

Individual tax payers are being hit with the Medicare Contribution and need to look closely at their tax planning on income and investments.

Some of these companies design and manufacture medical devices designed to save and prolong lives but they are not exempt from the tax and must pay it along with alcohol and tobacco producers.

They may not even be turning a profit but medical device makers must pay a new 2.3% excise on sales to contribute to the $30 billion Obama needs over the next 10 years to pay for his health reform.

Venture capital funding in this industry has fallen to levels on par with 2004 and only $434 million is being poured into just 65 agreements according to a report by the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

This research and development money is leaving America and being invested in foreign companies.

Industry voices crying out for help

One only has to read some of the comments and pleas made by owners of small medical device companies to Cook Medical, one of the largest in this industry, when asked their opinion on the coming storm:

“I have several patents on new medical devices, which could bring more jobs to N.J and the U.S., but investors are fleeing the medical device area because of the unfavorable conditions we are facing, like this new tax.”–Andre DiMino, founder ADM Tronics, Northvale, N.J.

“This will ruin my business and force me to cut employees after I spent years creating precious jobs in a down economy for a rural area,”–Eric Smith, Valencia Family Dental, Los Lunas, New Mexico.

Medicare Contribution creeping into income and investments

It’s not hard to guess that this will lead to job losses in the sector. Not only will people working in crucial jobs face unemployment but all of us must be warned that higher taxes are in store not just on income but on investments.

The 3.8% Medicare Contribution is a reality and we need to think carefully about how we can protect our money from being subject to this tax.

Take a look at a Forbes article that guides through some different strategies on protecting investments and points out that taxes are only one of the many different components of a total investment portfolio.

It’s ironic that the very guys trying to attract investment for new medical technologies are being hit hard by Obamacare. We may have to sit back and watch more of these businesses fold as the venture capitalists turn away and pour investment capital into foreign countries.

Why isn’t Obama trying to ensure that these businesses stay safe and continue their important work?

It’s a question we should keep asking as we get used to the IRS collections from our own pockets in 2013.

Nominal GDP backs up the Fed chair and his market-monetarist supporters.

Visit the Kudlow Report

Apropos of my column of a week ago — “Has Bernanke Gotten the Story Right?” — this week’s paltry GDP revision again backs up the actions of the Federal Reserve chairman and his market-monetarist supporters.

Real GDP was a miniscule 0.4 percent at an annual rate for last year’s fourth quarter, up from an earlier estimate of 0.1 percent. Perhaps more to the point, the year-on-year GDP change is only 1.7 percent, less than the 2 percent average growth of the Obama recovery, which is still the weakest in modern times going back to 1947.

Inside the report, there was good strength in housing investment (17.6 percent), business equipment (11.8 percent), and business structures like factories and warehouses (16.7 percent), all in annual rates for last year’s fourth quarter. Consumer spending, however, was a rather soft 1.8 percent.

But get this: While government spending fell 7 percent, private sector GDP rose at a decent clip. This still suggests that budget cuts lead to government austerity, and are not a negative for private-sector prosperity. That’s a key lesson in this whole sequester debate.

Incidentally, corporate profits after-tax rose 13 percent year on year in the new GDP report. This shows how resilient business is, despite regulatory obstacles like Obamacare and all the various tax hikes that come with it.

But back to Bernanke. Nominal GDP, which is what the market monetarists want the Fed to target, has increased only 3.5 percent over the past year, which is below the 4 percent trend line of recent years. I believe my monetarist friends want a 5 percent target for national income. And that is why they want the Federal Reserve to continue its policy of pushing bank reserves into the system.

The problem is, much of the Fed’s $3 trillion balance sheet remains on deposit as excess bank reserves, getting a 0.25 percent interest rate from the central bank. The actual money supply — M2 — does not reflect the printing-press mythology that has grown up around the Fed’s story.

To wit, M2 over the past year has grown by less than 7 percent. But the turnover of money, called velocity, has fallen by 3.5 percent. Therefore, despite the Fed’s stimulus, overall nominal GDP (real growth plus inflation) is still a sluggish 3.5 percent.

What’s more, Bernanke’s boast that he has held inflation down remains true, at least through fourth-quarter revised GDP. Both the GDP deflator and the chain price index have increased only 1.8 percent, and show no signs of acceleration.

And the gold price is hovering around $1,600. It really hasn’t moved over the past year. Nor has it budged since the Fed instituted its latest quantitative-easing, bond-buying policy last September. Even more interesting, King Dollar continues to strengthen. In fact, the greenback has gained ground since the Fed’s September QE announcement.

As I’ve said before, the gigantic increase in the Fed’s balance sheet, which will run close to $4 trillion later this year, makes me very uneasy. And if the velocity turnover of money does pick up in the future, there will be an inflation problem that will be very difficult for the Fed to unwind. Can it sell its massive bond portfolio in a timely fashion? No one can say.

But at the moment, looking at the numbers, I’m going to give this round to Mr. Bernanke and his market-monetarist supporters. There is no massive printing-press money, no huge inflation jump, and certainly no overheated economy. With the U.S. economy rising at perhaps 2 to 3 percent in the first quarter, which is much better than the economies of Europe and Japan, and with the U.S. stock market hovering near record highs, I would have to characterize my stance as relatively optimistic, but certainly not irrationally exuberant.

However, I continue to disagree with the Fed chair on fiscal policy. We need more government spending cuts coupled with serious tax reduction for large and small companies in order to boost this economy without injecting more and more money. This supply-side policy would deliver a much more predictable and reliable path to prosperity.

But on monetary matters, it may just be that the Bernanke Fed is right where it should be.

I just can’t take it anymore…New York City’s nanny mayor, Michael Bloomberg, is an idiot! Yeah…I said it! How in the world New Yorkers think this man is worthy to be their mayor is beyond me…Perhaps they don’t read…OR, perhaps they read the bought-and-paid-for-media version of what’s going on, without bothering to verify the facts! That HAS to be it…The only other excuse is that New York is full of brain dead zombies that couldn’t think for themselves if their life depended on it…WHICH IT DOES!

Nanny Bloomberg is on my very last nerve, if you couldn’t tell…someone posted about Bloomberg’s $12 million ad campaign promoting support for gun legislation. Oh, man am I sick of these anti-gun pukes! Besides for the utter waste of funds for the ad campaign, add to that the name of the 900-mayor bipartisan coalition, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and you have a 900-person league of people with their heads planted firmly up their posterior!

Let me set you who are in positions of power straight…Illegal guns are just that…a gun that someone acquired ILLEGALLY! NO amount of gun control will stop criminals from getting those guns!

To add insult to injury, apparently no one who advocates for gun control pays a lick of attention to the real time studies on banning guns and their results. Yes, we really do have LOTS of information about what happens when you ban guns…Piers Morgan, Jim Carrey (news and entertainment in cahoots with government???

Peddling Influence!!!) and your gun-banning friends be damned! The information is easily accessible through the Dept of Justice’s website! For crying out loud! If any one who knows it’s there can find it, why can’t those screaming for gun control find it?

AND, why is it that Senator Diane Feinstein, yeah, the very same who is proposing more gun control legislation, who sits on the Judiciary subcommittee Crime and Terrorism, cannot simply click, click, click, like I did and get this information? Why can’t her staff? I mean, really! We pay them a lot of money and we have to do their work for them too? Boy they have it GOOD!

Here is your history lesson for today. There was a handgun ban and trigger lock law in affect in the District of Columbia for thirty-two years…THIRTY-TWO YEARS! During that time, the murder rate did NOT go down…it went UP…SUBSTANTIALLY! In April, 1982, Chicago started enforcing its new regulation concerning legally owned pistols.

In 1968, according to regulations, all firearms had to be registered. By the latter 1980’s many Illinois municipalities had banned handgun possession. SO…we have real time studies of banning handguns. Lets look at some statistics!

During the time of the D.C. law and that of the Chicago regulation, and later the Illinois law Illinois’s murder rate was 8.9 per 100,000. D.C.’s was 45.6 per 100,000. D.C.’s rate is nearly 6 times higher than that of Illinois…with a handgun ban and trigger lock law IN PLACE! Let’s compare these figures to other states with high crime areas, New York and California.

During the same time, California and New York saw a murder rate of 9.7 and 9.0 per 100,000, respectively. Now, take into consideration the population of the District of Columbia and Los Angeles, ALONE, and you get a picture not to friendly about gun control, in my humble opinion!

While I agree there aren’t many figures to compare since the handgun ban and trigger lock law was declared unconstitutional, but, the murder rate in D.C. has started its downward spiral. In fact, the 2 years since the District of Columbia v Heller was issued, the 2010 murder rate is at an all time low…LOW!

This scares me, in several ways, as I am sure that one day, Nanny Bloomberg will become president and we just don’t need another brain-dead idiot in office…we just don’t!

SO, Mr. Jackass Idiot Bloomberg, tell me again, how gun control legislation is going to help reduce the crime rate? Wake the hell up! Gun control legislation is NOT going to prevent illegal guns…just sayin’!

Has Bernanke Gotten the Story Right? by Larry Kudlow

The most important point in Ben Bernanke’s Wednesday press conference was the announcement that the Fed will adjust the amount of monthly bond purchases according to economic conditions. In other words, an improving economy with stronger payrolls and lower unemployment could lead to a decline in Fed bond buying, from $85 billion a month to something gradually lower, so long as the economy keeps looking better.

It won’t happen all at once. The Fed is not convinced that the current economic upturn is truly sustainable. But Bernanke is implying that the Fed may become less easy in the second half of this year, perhaps ending QE in 2014.

The zero-interest-rate target will unfortunately remain in place much longer — until unemployment goes to 6.5 percent or less. Given rising tax and regulatory threats from Washington, and the job-stopping Obamacare regulations and mandates, unemployment may be sticky on the downside.

But the big news is that the Fed may stop growing its balance sheet sooner than most market people expect. As someone who is totally uncomfortable with the Fed’s $4 trillion balance sheet and reserve-creation process, I welcome the news. The central bank is listening to its critics, both inside and out.

And it’s worth noting that a mild economic upturn is in the cards, perhaps driving real GDP toward 3 percent. Lower jobless claims, stronger housing numbers, and a rebound in the index of leading indicators confirm the better economic trend. Highly respected economists Conrad DeQuadros and John Ryding point to a broad range of indicators that “show an upswing in economic activity.”

But an important alternative view is saying “not so fast.” The old Milton Friedman monetarists have been reborn as the “market monetarists.” And these folks say the Fed should move very cautiously toward a less-accommodative policy.

In particular, they point to sub-par growth in nominal GDP — or total spending in the economy (real output plus inflation). Nominal GDP is trending at only 4 percent or slightly less. So the market monetarists say the Fed should keep adding reserves until nominal GDP moves up to 5 percent, perhaps including 3 percent real output and 2 percent inflation.

The market monetarists think the Fed has not been so easy.

In this vein, economist Michael Darda argues that Fed reserve creation and its unemployment target (the 6.5 percent Bernanke-Evans rule) has only partially offset a negative velocity shock of historic proportions. This, says Darda, is why the economy has been so weak.

Economist Scott Grannis adds that the Fed is not really “printing money.” Yes, the central bank has purchased the incredible sum of nearly $2.5 trillion in Treasury and mortgage bonds. But most of that has not been put to work by banks or consumers. Grannis argues that consumers have increased their cash balances and that banks are holding onto extra reserves in order to avoid risk following the financial meltdown. As a result, the M2 money supply has been growing at a fairly steady rate of 6 to 7 percent. Not an excessive pace.

Meanwhile, M2 has grown much faster than nominal GDP. Consequently, the velocity (or turnover rate) of money has been falling for years.

All this is to say that the demand for cash and cash equivalence by consumers and banks is so strong in a risk-averse environment that all the Fed has really done is meet those cash demands. It’s not working the printing presses overtime.

In fact, the inflation rate during this whole period has been trending around 2 percent or less, far below the expectations of Fed critics (including myself). Over the past year, M2 growth has been about 7.5 percent and M2 velocity has fallen by about 3.5 percent. So the rise in nominal GDP is a historically low 3.5 percent.

Interestingly, while the inflation rate has remained subdued, so have market-price indicators, such as gold, the dollar, and commodity indexes. The suggestion here is that Bernanke, rather than mounting a high-inflation policy, has been avoiding deflation.

At the end of the day, the Federal Reserve is not the engine of growth. Low tax rates, light regulation, and limited government spending create the incentives for more rapid economic expansion and prosperity-inducing opportunities.

But if I have this story right, the market monetarists want the central bank to enforce a nominal GDP growth rule, which will avoid both deflation and inflation, and thus give fiscal incentives breathing room for a more rapid job-creating expansion.

I don’t agree with Bernanke’s unemployment target or his criticism of lower government spending. But I confess that he may have the monetary-stability story more right than I originally thought.

If gold remains soft, and King Dollar steady, perhaps the former Princeton professor deserves a little more credit.

He may have gotten that story right

Optimism in the air by Larry Kudlow

That’s the new message of stocks and politics . . .

You might not know it from the acrimonious political debate on cable and broadcast TV, or on talk radio, or on websites and blogs. But here’s a counterintuitive observation: Amidst all the negativism out there, I believe optimism is in the air.

That’s right. Optimism.

Sometimes you have to search for it, or read it in the fine print. But I believe the political economy is getting better, not worse.

Let me make a few points to defend what most folks believe is an indefensible position.

The stock market is hitting record highs daily, returning a tremendous amount of wealth to the half of American households that own shares. This investor-class wealth-creation alone is sparking a new sense of confidence and optimism.

Then on a smaller scale, housing — the other great source of American wealth — is beginning an impressive recovery. Over 60 percent of Americans own their own home, a key form of wealth. Like stocks, the housing recovery is creating a new sense of optimism after a very long and depressing dry spell.

Then there’s the anemic economic recovery. It’s the worst in modern times going back to 1947. But wait a minute — things are looking up here, too.

Let me quote from the highly respected economists Conrad DeQuadros and John Ryding:

“In the last two weeks, we have seen manufacturing ISM, non-manufacturing ISM, ABP employment, payrolls, jobless claims, retail sales, and industrial production beat expectations and show an upswing in economic activity.”

Record profits for business may be driving this economic pickup. And it’s all unfolding after the supposedly catastrophic budget-cutting sequester, and after a tax-hike bill that supply-siders like myself opposed (although income and investment taxes went up much less than feared).

In fact, even the eruption in government spending is showing signs of calming down. Taking into account a modest recovery, spending-cut bills of roughly $2 trillion, and an end to the failed spending stimulus of 2009, the federal spending share of the economy has dropped from 25 percent in 2009-10, to 24 percent in 2011, to just below 23 percent last year.

As I have argued time and again, spending cuts and limited government lower the overall tax burden and promote economic growth.

Finally, Fed policy remains highly accommodative, while there are no real signs of an inflation problem. The Fed has stabilized nominal GDP (total spending in the economy) at around 4 percent, which will probably move higher toward 5 percent in the next year. And King Dollar is strengthening. All this is good.

And might there be just a bit more optimism on the political front?

President Obama has embarked on a charm offensive, initiating more dialogue with Republicans than in the past four years. Of course, the Reagan adage “trust but verify” applies to Mr. Obama’s newfound charms.

But in a recent interview with former vice-presidential candidate and current House budget chair Paul Ryan, I found more optimism. While on the subject of Obama’s new diplomacy, I asked Ryan if he believes a grand design, including spending, entitlements, and tax reform, is a good thing. Is it achievable? He replied, “I do think it’s a good thing. I do think it’s achievable. And I do think it should be done.

“So the question from our perspective is, ‘Was this so-called charm offensive a one-off event?’ Or was it a new posture — a new conversion that’s about to continue?”

Ryan’s new budget roadmap is more vision than green-eyeshade exercise: Repeal Obamacare. Replace it with a patient-centered health-care system. Go for true pro-growth tax reform by lowering marginal rates and broadening the base for individuals and businesses. (By the way, Obama is talking about corporate tax reform. Maybe common ground can be found.)

Ryan also spoke of welfare reform, including food stamps and ways to reduce child poverty and get single mothers back on their feet. He wants to do everything possible to encourage the energy revolution sweeping America. He believes a lower spending burden on the economy is pro-growth. He targets a ten-year balanced budget at 19.1 percent of GDP: Budget growth overall would drop from 5 percent to 3.4 percent, while spending would be curbed by roughly $5 trillion.

And yes, after his first significant meeting with President Obama, and despite the major differences, Paul Ryan says it’s possible to achieve common ground.

“I’m cautiously optimistic about this,” he said.

Of course the differences are huge. And Senator Patty Murray just put out a Democratic budget (first time in over four years) that raises taxes by $1.5 trillion, with virtually no spending cuts. No common ground there.

But I’m still optimistic. Small pro-growth advances are possible as long as people are talking. I see a thaw in politics. So does the stock market.

Optimism is in the air.
