Watch Your Investment Strategy

The 2013 New Year brought another blow to small medical businesses as Health-Reform Taxes kicked in and promised to scare off venture capitalists as the little guy suffers.

Individual tax payers are being hit with the Medicare Contribution and need to look closely at their tax planning on income and investments.

Some of these companies design and manufacture medical devices designed to save and prolong lives but they are not exempt from the tax and must pay it along with alcohol and tobacco producers.

They may not even be turning a profit but medical device makers must pay a new 2.3% excise on sales to contribute to the $30 billion Obama needs over the next 10 years to pay for his health reform.

Venture capital funding in this industry has fallen to levels on par with 2004 and only $434 million is being poured into just 65 agreements according to a report by the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

This research and development money is leaving America and being invested in foreign companies.

Industry voices crying out for help

One only has to read some of the comments and pleas made by owners of small medical device companies to Cook Medical, one of the largest in this industry, when asked their opinion on the coming storm:

“I have several patents on new medical devices, which could bring more jobs to N.J and the U.S., but investors are fleeing the medical device area because of the unfavorable conditions we are facing, like this new tax.”–Andre DiMino, founder ADM Tronics, Northvale, N.J.

“This will ruin my business and force me to cut employees after I spent years creating precious jobs in a down economy for a rural area,”–Eric Smith, Valencia Family Dental, Los Lunas, New Mexico.

Medicare Contribution creeping into income and investments

It’s not hard to guess that this will lead to job losses in the sector. Not only will people working in crucial jobs face unemployment but all of us must be warned that higher taxes are in store not just on income but on investments.

The 3.8% Medicare Contribution is a reality and we need to think carefully about how we can protect our money from being subject to this tax.

Take a look at a Forbes article that guides through some different strategies on protecting investments and points out that taxes are only one of the many different components of a total investment portfolio.

It’s ironic that the very guys trying to attract investment for new medical technologies are being hit hard by Obamacare. We may have to sit back and watch more of these businesses fold as the venture capitalists turn away and pour investment capital into foreign countries.

Why isn’t Obama trying to ensure that these businesses stay safe and continue their important work?

It’s a question we should keep asking as we get used to the IRS collections from our own pockets in 2013.

Creating Chemistry by Mary Jane Popp

Can you create chemistry with anyone? Leil Lowndes thinks you can. She is one of today’s most sought-after speakers on communication techniques and is author of the international bestsellers “Goodbye to Shy,” “How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You,” and “How to Talk with Anyone.”

So my curiosity got the best of me, and I had her on my radio show POPPOFF to talk about her seventy-five ways to spark it fast and make it last book “How to Create Chemistry with Anyone.” I honestly thought this was a stretch, because there are some people that…well you know…no way in Hades you can have a relationship. It just doesn’t come together. But Leil says never fear, she has plenty of ways to cope. I’ve got to admit, so many books promise ways to keep passion alive forever.

I wondered if that’s even possible? Leil gave some no-nonsense practical info in her book. She said that on the average, intense passion only lasts from eighteen months to two years because, no matter how exciting or beloved someone is, sex with the same person doesn’t produce the same hormonal and dopamine rush. Additionally, pregnancy causes very different chemicals. Tragically, many couples feel when the passion diminishes, it means loving is diminishing too. Absolutely not!

Often it means just the opposite because bonding chemicals—which mean long-term contentment—are in conflict with testosterone. So I asked Leil to give me her top ten ways to encourage lasting chemistry for couples:

1)    Keep doing dopamine-producing fun and active things together. You’ll spend a lot more on divorce or marriage counseling than you will for babysitters and movie tickets now.

2)    Touch a lot, especially the non-sexy kind. Accidental or intended, fleeting or abiding, touch stimulates the trust chemical and reinforces togetherness.

3)    Encourage him to hold his newborn infant. This stimulates vasopressin, another bonding chemical in males, which has the effect of making him more protective of his family.

4)    Laugh a lot together.  When your body is laughing, you’re brain thinks you’re happy and, of course, you’re mate thinks you’re the reason for the joy.

5)    Support each other’s goals and aspirations.  Encourage your partner to talk about them.

6)    Understand your partner’s very different way of thinking due to brain structure. (Example:  He is not neuroanatomically capable to easily talk about his feelings even if he’d like to. She can’t stop making interconnections and assumptions about everything.

7)    Men, become sensitive to her “micro-expressions.” Women respect his silent times. It’s easier when you realize the different ways your partner’s brain is wired.

8)    Ladies, give him lots of quickies, even when you don’t feel like it. He’ll interpret it as loving him. If he gets turned down too often, he won’t start the slow lovemaking you like for fear of being rejected.

9)    Gentlemen, think “slow seduction,” not “sex.” Remember turnabout is fair foreplay. Make time to give her lots of slow-ies.

10)  Words work wonders. Keep saying what your partner craves hearing. Gentlemen, tell her you love her—once a day minimum. Women, find ways to let him know you actually need him (whether you actually do for certain things or not.)

I absolutely love how Leil describes the distinction between being in love and lasting love. For this, she quotes the English author, Louis de Bernieres.

“ Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like a volcano and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is:

Love is not breathless, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion…That is just the being “in love” which any fool can do.

Love itself is what is left over when “being in love” has burned away, and that is both an art and a fortunate accident.” This should be mandatory reading before a marriage license is granted. But I realize few will read and most will ignore the wisdom behind this statement. After forty-two years of marriage, I can truthfully say that these are true words of wisdom.

Patrick, a Division One college athlete with a degree in Kinesiology and Biomechanics has developed a program called Postural Alignment Therapy, PAT for short. PAT is physics-based and uses software to measure your individual alignment. Then that same software determines your misalignments and recommends specific exercises to correct them.

Each person has a tailored exercise program that you do in the privacy of your own home for about fifteen minutes, twice a day, over a four-month period. After that, you transition into a maintenance program to fit your particular time commitment.

And here’s the most exciting news. I have to tell you, it was a major surprise for me. Symmetry for Health has hit a home run for my situation. I began the program about three months ago. Why? I was told by my docs that I was losing bone mass at a much too high a rate.

My fear…osteoporosis. And I didn’t want to take meds that have some possibly terrible side effects. February 15, 2013 was the date states had to notify the Feds as to whether they were going to set up state health care exchanges. Twenty one (21)  states said NO.

This means the Feds will have to do it and they don’t have the money. The bill did not provide for a “plan B” if states refused to set them up the exchanges.

States will have to ask Congress for more money. At the end of March, 2013, the Federal Government will shut down unless they can pass another Continuing resolution to fund the federal government.

This means the Whitehouse and Congress will be facing another “fiscal cliff” starting in a couple of weeks.

You can use GradeGov.com and ask your member of Congress NOT to fund ObamaCare and to put the funding restriction into the Continuing Resolution.

This project/campaign will begin Feb. 23 and end March 23–the 3rd Birthday of ObamaCare.

“Join in the campaign,” says Elizabeth Letchworth. “I am starting to engage the RGA (Republican Governors Association) and asking them to hold press conferences about not setting up their exchanges and to publicly ask the Whitehouse to explain where the money will come from to set up the exchanges?”

Saving Your Heart by Mary Jane Popp

We are into the heart mood as we near Valentine’s Day with every heart cliché’ you can think of. And we all love the flowers and the candy and the cards too. Maybe we should be thinking long and hard about the real heart that keeps us going every day instead of the candy ones.

The number one killer in the U.S. is heart disease. But when you think of heart problems, you picture an overweight middle-aged man, right?

What if I told you the number one killer of women in North America is heart disease? Got your attention, huh? It accounts for a third of all deaths in women and far surpasses the prevalence of breast cancer.

It’s true, and that’s why Cardiologist Dr. Martha Gulati and Pharmacist Sherry Torkos took on the task of getting women, who often neglect their heart health, to take notice in their book “Saving Women’s Hearts.” While the stats can be frightening, the good news is that most risk factors for heart disease can be changed.

You can bet my ears perked up when Sherry took me on the Myths and Misconceptions of women and heart disease on my POPPOFF Radio Show.

1) Heart disease is only an issue for elderly women: While heart disease is the chief killer of women over 65, it is the second leading cause of death in women ages 45-64 and the third leading cause of death in women 25-44.

2) Women should be treated less aggressively after a heart attack than men: Absolutely not. The unfortunate reality is that women are treated less aggressively after a heart attack and are also morel likely to die after suffering a heart attack.

3) Risk factors for heart disease are the same in women as in men: Not so. Certain conditions are more likely to cause heart disease in women than in men, such as metabolic syndrome and menopause. Stress is also more likely to damage women’s hearts.

4) Sex increases the risk of heart attack: It is commonly thought that sex is a major trigger for heart attacks, yet only 1% of heart attacks are brought on by sexual activity.

5) Coffee is bad for your heart: While too much caffeine can raise blood pressure, coffee actually contains significant amounts of antioxidants. A recent review of 21 studies found that women who drank one to four cups daily actually had a lower risk of heart disease.

6) Nuts can raise cholesterol levels: Nuts are a good source of soluble fiber and other nutrients and research has found that consuming a handful of nuts daily can lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.

7) Hormone replacement therapy protects against heart disease: In fact, menopausal women who participate in estrogen replacement therapy actually may be at increased risk for heart disease.

So I asked Sherry how I can save my heart, and she shared these nine ways:

1) Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Women who sleep 6 hours or less have been shown to be at greater risk.

2) Take 10,000 steps a day. Use a pedometer and gradually increase the number each day. Exercise fights heart disease in numerous ways.

3) Have oatmeal with chia seed for breakfast. The soluble fiber in oats and chia can help lower cholesterol.

4) Eat more fish, garlic, and green tea. These foods help cut heart disease risk.

5) Choose whole grain bread/pasta and brown rice over white rice. Studies show that highly refined carbs are worse for your heart than foods high in saturated fat, like red meat and butter.

6) Avoid foods that contain trans-fatty acids. They can raise cholesterol levels and increase risk of heart disease.

7) Don’t sweat the small stuff. Stress is a major risk factor for heart disease.

8) Laugh more. Laughing relaxes and expands blood vessels, which protects the heart.

9) Get screened for heart disease…beginning at age 20!

Wow! That stuff about stress really got to me. Maybe that’s where the breaking your heart saying comes from. I wanted to finish on a positive note with Valentine’s Day coming soon. So Sherry gave me five Heart-Smart Indulgences.
