It’s always fun to carry perceived messages from characters in government. You don’t have to mock or make fun of them. They do it themselves.
In 1970 Dan worked as managing editor of ‘Current Thought on Peace and War’ at the United Nations in New York. That year was the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the organization, when the world’s leaders congregated in Manhattan to join in the festivities.
As a young journalist and aspiring political cartoonist Dan staked out the press box in the General Assembly and personally witnessed speeches by Nixon, Castro, Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir and a host of others. Dan’s first hand sketches of presidents, prime ministers and dictators became his early portfolio of caricatures, which he developed into the political artwork he is known for today.
“The leader who impressed me the most was Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, descendent of King Solomon and Queen of Sheba,” Youra reminisces. “Decked out in his leopard skins, he was a contrast to the black suits.”
‘Current Thought on Peace and War’ published articles on nuclear disarmament, non proliferation of nuclear weapons, and topics related to regional wars around the world.
Dan studied international relations for three years in graduate school at The Ohio State University and Mershon Center for National Security. He received his B.A. degree in international studies from the University of Wisconsin and a regular contributor at PRonlineNews.com with a full boat of caricatures at uTOONS.com.
